La Calera, Colombia
2010 - Current
This site is located in La Calera, a suburban district of the Colombian capital of Bogotá. The immediate boundaries of the site lie in the Hato gorge. To the north there is an access road, to the east a pocket of undeveloped land, and to the west between two pockets of land lie a forest of eucalyptus trees and plants native to the area.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the emergence of guerrilla activity and the growth of drug trafficking as a major social and economic part of life left the area underdeveloped. This predominantly agricultural area located 15 minutes from the commercial centre of Bogotá is an oasis for those who work in the city and are seeking some quiet surbuban peace close to the facilities of this large city.
Although the current development is looking to create a single-family environment, there is high awareness of the rural character of the area and a will to develop in a way that is sympathetic to the fundamental nature of the existing topography. In order for this to be successful, the boundaries of the site will need to be carved out within the current set-up.
