Skinner Trevino House, London

2006 - 2007

A semi detached late Victorian house on a wide street in a leafy neighbourhood in Wandsworth. The property, which lacked natural light and suffered from a very gloomy and highly compartmentalised layout, had great potential for development.

From the front, the house looks unchanged apart from the amount of light that is now clearly present inside the property. The interior was virtually gutted and the original staircase retained and extended up to the top of the house. On the upper two storeys the stairs are made of structural glass and positioned between a skylight prism and a two-way mirror. A shower is located on the other side of the mirror, affording the user both privacy and an uninterrupted view of the garden. The skylight allows natural light to flood down through the entire house.

The project also opened up the ground floor into an almost completely open plan layout. Discreet wall lighting was installed to create a sense of light throughout the space. A rear extension built of glass created additional space and brought huge amounts of daylight into the kitchen. On the north facing side extension, a sloping glass roof frames an existing Victorian door, enhancing the quality of this feature. At the far end, and echoing the glass prism at the top of the stairwell, a large glass door opens out into the garden. The west-facing position of the house protects the glass from overheating in the sun.

At loft level a grand master bedroom suite with balcony frames the view of the back elevation of the row of houses opposite and their reflection of the first red rays of the rising sun. Above this dormer clad in a warm fabric of thin larch slats, there is a sun deck that overlooks the nearby church tower and its surroundings on Santos Road.
